There are places in the world, where GPS-based Taximeter apps are not allowed. For instance, the European Union requires that taximeters retrieve the distance from the car's electronics.
With a Bluetooth capable OBD dongle, like the one shown above, connected to the smartphone / tablet, the app gets access to the car's electronics data and can calculate the fare without a need for GPS.
Also, in places with many tunnels or notoriously bad GPS signals, OBD might be the better option.
How to setup OBD?
-Pair your Bluetooth OBD II with your smartphone / tablet. Any OBD II dongle with Bluetooth should work.
-Select menu option OBD in the app and select your device.
-OBD icon displays in the menu bar.
grey -> app is in progress of setting up connection
red -> connection failed (try again by clicking on the icon)
green -> connection is up
-When you start a trip and the icon is green, app will ALWAYS take OBD as a source. Your tariff can be configured such that an OBD connection is mandatory to be able to start a trip.
-You can switch between OBD & GPS during trip: click on the OBD icon and confirm the switch. Your tariff can be configured to prohibit changing calculation mode. If OBD connection fails, then the switch to GPS based calculations happens automatically.
-When the OBD icon is green with a 'X' in the middle, that means OBD is up, but is currently not used for calculating the fare.
Available for Android only.
